Predominantly, nicotine is the dominant factor as to why we all go back and smoke a cigarette, and find it difficult to quit. In actual fact, it is the starting point of the addiction to cigarettes in the first instance, which is why so many people find it incredibly difficult to give up permanently. Vegetable Glycerine is the key element which determines the smoothness of a vape, and creates major cloud production. VG has a thick, glutinous, syrupy texture, usually tastes mildly sweet, and is one of the main ingredients within an e-liquid. The higher the VG level the smoother the vape, the larger the clouds, and the better the overall vaping experience.
Propylene Glycol is the second main ingredient found in e-liquids. Most concentrate flavours are PG-based, and used with a small amount of PG (for example, 20% whereas the VG content will be 80%-totalling 100%). The more PG you have within an e-liquid, the more intense the throat hit will be-and this is without taking the nicotine strength into consideration.
The most common nicotine strengths found in e-liquids is 0. This means that there is no nicotine content at all, which will not cause any scratch sensation in the back of the throat. 3mg is a very low amount of nicotine, however if it is used in a more powerful sub-ohm device then the user will experience a pleasant scratch on their throat, and this will also deter them from reverting back to cigarettes.
6mg is considered to be quite strong, especially if the e-liquid is being used through a sub-ohm tank, and the user will experience a major throat hit. 12mg is an extremely high amount of nicotine, which is not recommended for sub-ohm tanks, but rather a mouth-to-lung device.
Mouth-to-lung devices are very low-powered, as the maximum wattage used on these devices are predominantly 10-15 watts. Also, the VG to PG ratio used in e-liquids designed for mouth-to-lung devices is usually around the 50/50/or 60/40 mark. The reason being is because PG is extremely thin, clear and completely odourless.
Lower powered devices require thinner liquids for the coils in order to maintain them and enable them to be preserved over longer periods of time. However, if 50/50 liquids are used in sub-ohm tanks and pushed up to 30-40 watts then the user will experience an extremely big throat hit, regardless of nicotine or without. Your sub-ohm coil will be destroyed much faster in the process too.
Ratios are an extremely important thing to look out for when searching for a new e-liquid. If using an RDA or sub-ohm device it is strongly advised to use high-VG liquids. Low nicotine levels (for example 3mg) are more than enough for the user to satisfy the craving for a cigarette.
The level of nicotine required in an e-liquid is completely dependent on the capability of your device. If devices are sub-ohm then users should vape no more than 6mg of nicotine, with a high VG content. When using mouth-to-lung devices, those which require 1.0 ohm and above must use 50/50 juices, so that the coil can accept the liquid and perform to the user’s expectations.
In some instances, many vapers use an extremely high level of nicotine in their e-liquids, despite their previous smoking habits being light to medium. This means that they will be using the nicotine level better suited to a 40-a-day smoker, even though they only would normally smoke 10-a-day on average.
Using the wrong strength nicotine can lead to nicotine overdoses, which may cause headaches, nausea and insomnia as well as vivid dreams, a fast pulse and many other worrying side effects. Alternatively, using a nicotine strength which is too low might mean that you still crave cigarettes as you are suffering from withdrawal symptoms.
